house at 15th and 66. 34-year-old miriam carey hit the barrier and struck a secret service officer with her car. she sped off leading police on a chase. her 1-year-old child was in the car with her when all of this was unfolding. at one point carey's car was koerpd by police at garfield circle on the west side of the u.s. capitol. take a look at this video shot by al hurrahtv as this was unfolding. police, guns drawn. carey hit a cruiser and then made her escape. and at that point police fired a number of shots. she sped away ultimately crashed her car in the 100 block of maryland avenue. more shots were fired. carey died of her injuries. we are told, though, her 1-year-old daughter is going to be okay. now the big question is the motive. it was behind all of this? and that is still unclear and certainly part of the investigation. but here is what we do know about miriam carey. she is 34 years old. she's from stamford, connecticut. she's a dental resident

and kill the woman behind the wheel, miriam carey but who was she and what could have prompted this chain of events? here's cnn's deborah feyerick. >> reporter: something was bothering miriam carey something having to do with president obama, sources say her boyfriend allegedly told carey back in december that the president was using electronic surveillance to monitor her home to keep her city of stamford, connecticut, in lockdown. on thursday morning the dental hygienist packed a bag of clothing and stramed their daughter in the back seat of their black infiniti and drove 300 miles to washington, d.c., according to toll records and cell towers. carey appeared eager to get to the white house. pulling up to a checkpoint, exchanging harsh words and clipping a security officer with her car as she peeled away. she had worked for dentist brian evans before being let go. >> we hired her. we thought she was a great employee while she was here. she had an accident, fell, and had a head injury. she found out she was pregnant during that time that she was hospitalized. >> reporter: in december of 2
she went about her business. it's just -- >> reporter: abc news learned carey had a history of mental illness, appeared to intensify after her baby was born in august 2012. it was then her mother tells abc news, she was diagnosed with post partum depression. in december, according to a stamford, connecticut police report, a man described as carey's boyfriend called in expressing concern for the safety of their daughter. then five months old. he said carey was delusional, emotionally disturbed. the boyfriend claimed carey believed she was a prophet, whose home was under 24 hour surveillance by president obama and national tv networks. she was taken to the hospital at least two other times that month. a report by connecticut authorities describes her as on medication for unknown mental illness. with a family history of schizophrenia. she seemed to stabilize, but something went terribly wrong. and by yesterday, carey was battling police, who killed her firing more than a dozen shots. she was apparently unarmed. but police believed she was a threat. >> what were police thinking
